You can do it that way and with the 300 unit, I would recommend it! Most of the pre cut magnetic material places I have send will give you the vector outline for the design to use.

so I would need to buy pre contoured magnetic material, decal media, print, apply and trim after application?

You cannot print directly onto magnetic material with a 300 unit. You will need to print onto decal vinyl and then apply it to the magnetic material.

so does this mean we can not print on magnetic material if we have the 300i?

On the 300 units you cannot adjust the head height. You can only adjust the head height on a 540 unit.
