A Digital Printing Network

Last week was a fast week, with the Thanksgiving holiday squished in the middle (I am sure many of you felt the same way.) Monday began a 3 day adventure of printing and installing a 36' wall mural. This is an 8' x 36' graphic installed in Clifton Park
Center (our mall) which shows the layout for the newly begun renovations (the
addition of a hotel on top of the mall...yes, you read that
correctly... and the new cinema).

The material used for the job is an actual wall graphic material
(Seramark - from Imprintables) (same concept as the "Fatheads") and is removable without
leaving residue behind. After finalizing the graphics and size, Steve
set the job up for printing...a total of 9 tiles (4' wide by 8' long
each) and we spent Monday watching the printer & waiting. Once each tile was
printed it was trimmed, wrapped and set aside ready for the next
step...the big install!

Tuesday morning, we met with DCG and determined the final placement of
the prints. The wall was measured, lines drawn out and Steve &
Michele began. Laying the initial tile, they lined up the top and
bottom to be straight with the floor & ceiling and taped the
graphic to the wall. Removing a portion of the top of the graphic from
the backing, they carefully squeegeed the print to the wall. From
there, it was easy to proceed downward with the rest of the graphic.

Almost complete (Thank you Santa's Helpers!)
When the first tile was down, the second tile was overlapped onto the first, lining everything up top to bottom. The same
procedure was followed, removing a a portion of the print from the
backing and squeegeeing it to the wall. I had the "brilliant" idea of
these awesome Elf Ears...and Michele & Steve were good sports about
wearing them for some pictures. I do believe they received some
compliments from mall shoppers too! (Oh, and don't worry, I made sure
they found their way to Facebook!)
This is it...the big moment!

Thirty six feet later, the wall graphic was completely installed and I
had to check it over (Yes I did sit there taking pictures and sipping
coffee throughout most of the install...tough job, but somebody had to
do it!) Overall, the installation took approximately 3 hours and with
two sets of hands, and a great supervisor (if I may so so myself...)
things went quite smooth!

The following day, we added the wall graphic prints referring to gift cards purchases. What a week and an awesome project! If you are ever in
Clifton Park Center, take a look at the wall and the beautiful
expansion project DCG has going on.

Seramark is easy to work with, great for temporary signage. I highly recommend it!

Yes, I am very interested in additional details of the tiling.  I would think that this would be of interest to a lot of people, not just me.  Enjoy your flight.

Thanks

Dennis, we used a .5 inch overlap on the design. I did not have to calculate any equipment costs as they provided the lift. There was the cost of printing and then the installation charge. I believe we quoted them 4 hours at 60 an hour but the boss will have to verify that. Make sure to alternate top and bottom on the prints when you are doing tiles. It makes them lineup better. I will go into more detail on that later as I am sure you will ask but I am replying to this on an airplane from my iPad and do not have access to versa works right now to step through the process :-)

I just noticed this blog post, OK, I'm a little slow; it has only been up for about six weeks.  Can you give me additional information on how you tiled the image for printing?  How much overlap was there between tiles when printed and when applied, if there was any overlap when applied?  Also, if you had to do this for a client, would you use 6 person hours, the cost of Seramark and printing, and lift rental to calculate the cost?

Jim - it is 4.2 mils and conforms over the irregularities of drywall just fine.

That is a nice looking job....WELL DONE!!

Steve, I meant to ask, what mil thickness is that?

How well does it conform to the irregularities of the drywall?

Seramark does cut clean. I always recommend that you use a 60 degree blade and test before running the job but we have done it with a 45 degree with no issues many times in our shop.

Job looks great. We use another excellent fabric wall mural product called Photo Tex by Lexjet. Looking forward to testing the Seramark also. Does the Seramark cut-contour well. We had good luck with Photo-Tex cutting clean. I'll get some current pictures posted
