I have used curtian hooks, the ones with the needle like end. You might need to redirect the hook part. It doesn't destroy the table cloth either and if you put a piece of clear tape on both sides of the cloth (before you but the hook in)…

Don't forget that you can always use a water soluble stablizer on the top so that the design doesn't get lost in the material or distorted.
