7' wide magnetic sign on an excavator boom. Printed on Arlon DPF 6000XRP and laminated with matched Arlon overlaminate and applied to ProMAG 3 mil magnetic material using a Royal Sovereign laminator - cold setting. The sign it replaced had plain letters JSK. Client liked the 3-D effect we added and ordered another sign for the other side of the boom on this machine and second set for an identical machine.

Great minds think alike. In fact, I began the process doing exactly what you recommended, except that I heated the material with a heat gun first to help the adhesive remover work a little faster. Unfortunately, the adhesive used on the original equipment was very aggressive and did not succumb very readily to the process. To make matters worse, the decals were shredded and scraped from rubbing and abrasion against who knows what. Fellers also sells xylene and advertises it as a product that works when denatured alcohol doesn't.
Try some Adhesive remover from Fellers Supply-I've used it for years. Just get it in a spray bottle, mist the area if really stuck good, lay on a papertowel and soak it. Leave it for awhile and then start wiping it off-use a 'widget' scraper (plastic) and you'll get everything off without destroying the paint job. Spray a qtip with the adhesive remover and you can easily remove unwanted ink spots from the Versacamm printing...works great.
Comment by Dennis Dunning on August 22, 2012 at 7:33am You're right, xylene is nasty stuff, but it works when denatured alcohol won't. I wear rubber gloves and work in a well ventilated area when working with either denatured alcohol and xylene.
Thanks for the tip on the concrete pump, might not have thought of it.
Comment by Butch on August 22, 2012 at 7:20am Xylene - whew thats some spooky stuff kinda puts your head in the ozone if your not careful. Heres a tipfor you. If you ever do a concrete pump make sure the client extends the boom so you can see how it unfolds. If you don't place the graphic correctly it will read upside down when the boom is extended.
Comment by Dennis Dunning on August 21, 2012 at 10:14pm Thanks Butch. I am creating decals for about a dozen pieces of construction equipment belonging to this client, whose is a real pleasure to work with. Each piece of equipment will have a unique letter and number. Instead of making the letters and number plain black, I overlayed them with a diamond plate pattern. The client liked that idea too. This weekend I had to remove decals that must have been original equipment, what a pain. I had to use xylene to get the adhesive off.
