Any media will work,  You want to apply a clear coat to protect it afterwards.  There's a 2 part epoxy WoodCraft sells that handles hot and cold items with one coat.  One coat gives you an 1/8" clear top coat.

Here's a better view of the top of the dresser.  This advertisement was printed off my Roland Versa Camm and sealed with a polymer clear coat.
