Hello everyone!

Since we had to get on the road early the second day of training i missed the overview on variable data. I tried to find information on the DVD we were given but didn't see anything. I am doing a logo on some basketball bags with the players number in the middle of a ball. I have 30 bags and would love to utilize this tool! Please help!

Hello Jane do your design as you would like with all the information staying the same for all thirty bags. Where you want the number to go you have to put an out line that is similar to a cutline but named VD?_number - where ? is the letter I forgot and number will be the heading to the column you want to pull from. In excel you create a column that is labeled with the name of your variable data line. As you made he cutcontour line with a spot color you make one with the above name - when you open Versaworks you will now see the VD tab active and you can load the file and in the VD tab you load the excel file and set the parameters - the data would populate to the window - you can change individual or select the column to change all at one time. I know it sounds confusing and since I am in Rhode Island I will not get a chance until later to - provide step by step - but this will get you in the direction and use the help tab in versaworks.
thanks so much! what are you doing in rhode island? lucky for you you didnt fly over ohio again..
yes attending a Roland Training Course - and I have since routed all flight north or south of Ohio. The naming structure is VDP_whatever_u_like. Now on the CD that you recieved in class - check in he VDP folder for file example. s on how to set up. The important step is to name the column in excel whatever you name the color outline you are using to place your data. I do not believe their is a tutorial yet but we can get you through it if you understand how to make a spot color outline. - quickly - the blue line you name VDP_Number will coincide with a column called Number in your excel file. The file will look the same for all and the location where you want he number will have a outline box with the spot color assigned as VDP_Number - every value in there will be drawn from excel.
I am heading to Boston so I will check back when I get there
Here are some notes from the class I took with Steve earlier in the year:

In Corel...
-Create spot color with name... VDP_Name. Ex: VDP_Name, VDP_Photo
-Create container with spot color above for data.
-Export at EPS

In Excel...
-Create excel spreadsheet with the variables: Ex: VDP_Name, VDP_Photo
-Put in data, then save file as a .csv

In Versa Works...
-Import into Versaworks, then go to the Variable Data icon and click Enable Variabe data.
-Choose .csv file.
-Choose, options..font size, color, fonts, etc

Hope this helps!
Irv and Joseph are both correct about the steps in making the the VD outline and the Excel file. I have only the name of the file saved as VDP_ file no data. Once I open this in VW I add all my data there. Click on the add line box and insert the data you want and then set the attributes.
Excellent recap guys. I've copied these instructions into a word document and saved it so I can refer to it in the future. Thanks! (now all I have to do is remember to do this....)
Vicki,

The Variable Data feature is a great tool. I just got done printing little numbered stickers for an upcoming Fun Run. The stickers were in numerical order from 1-250. 250 items is the most you can run on one job. If you need more than 250 items, you would need to create another job (250-500).

A tutorial for the Variable Date feature can be found under the Help tab in VW. Just type in "Variable Date" and it will pull up the tutorial.
You can actually go into the VersaWorks Help menu by clicking Help > Show Help. Search the words "Variable Data" and it will give you a visual walk through of how to setup variable data printing. I never got the training and I looked online at several forums and it still seemed a little confusing. But as soon as I realized I could just look at the help file it cleared everything up for me. Just as an FYI for everybody, the Variable Data Function can not do Vertical Text. Only Horizontal. Believe me I was on the line with a Roland Rep immediately asking why they would include such a great function, but leave out simple functionability.
