Has anyone ever done a Metal Sign? The school needs some to put on the tennis courts and they are painted gold and then have vinyl letters on them. I don't know where to order the metal sign blank from and do you order it colored or do you have to paint it? Or should I just use my versacamm and print it on it? HELP

Ok, the alumimnum signs are ordred but now what is the correct way to apply and finish it. The graphic is on a yellow backround so I will make it a little larger and cut it after I apply it and I also ordered some liquid laminate but have never used it.  I assume I wait a day and just paint it on.  I just want to make sure I do my first sign job right so any advice you guys have is so welcome!!  Thanks

THERE ARE LOTS OF DIFFERENT TYPES OF METAL SIGNS. SO YOU NEED TO DO YOUR HOMEWORK ON WHAT YOU WANT TO USE. THERE IS STEEL AND ALUMINUM, DIFFERENT THINCKNESS. I WOULD USE A SIGN SUPPLIER FOR YOUR MATERIAL. THEY SHOULD BEABLE TO HELP YOU WORK OUT THE DETAILS OF WHAT YOU NEED FOR THIS JOB. ALSO FACTOR IN YOUR FRIEGHT COST. ASK IF THE MATAL IS TREATED WITH CHEMICALS, MAKING ANY DIFFERENT THEN IF YOU GO DOWN TO YOUR LOCAL HARDWARE SHOP AND BUY METAL.
Candy,

Thanks for the info, who do you buy your sign blanks from and do you use vinyl or print on the versacamm
I HAVE A SMALL SHOP AND HAVE NOT HAD IN REQUET FOR METAL. DEPENDS ON THE AMOUNT OF WEEDING INVOLDED. IF THERE IS A LOT I PRINT. TIME IS MONEY ALSO!

We use N GLANTZ for our aluminum signs. they like most suppliers, have a wide variety at different price levels. We usually use outdoor coated aluminum and print/laminate then apply the print. it is alot less work for us instead of cutting vinyl, masking lining up and taping, etc. A quick hinge application and you are done.

Richard,

Thank you for the info. I am just a small shop and new to this so it is all new to me. I was just going to get a liquid laminate to put on the sign, do you use liquid lam if so is there any you suggest. The other problem I run into with the graphic is the air bubbles. I know you said to hinge it but I still seem to get the bubbles, any suggestions??

Thank you so much for you help!
Sorry for the delay getting back with you, we spent the weekend on the boat on Lake Erie. We have used a liquid laminate before called Frog Juice, but we have laminators so we don't use liquid much, if at all any more. when applying a panel of printed material it is much easier to do if it is laminated, and for this type app use a vinyl with a air escape technology. even the less expensive calandered vinyls come with air release these days, it helps tremendously on installs. We also use a dowel stuck to the end width wise so it keeps the edges from rolling during your app and also gives you something to hold on to.

Hope this helps some.

Rick
Thank you Rick, I will check into them!!

Appreciate the info!
Stephanie,

Was Helen able to help you?
We are a small shop in a small town. The city wanted to put up a couple of pedestrian crossing signs at a walking track. We were going to buy blank aluminum new, then decided to check a local scrap metal dealer. He had some he would cut down to our sizes for much cheaper than we could buy new. Then one of the city workers found some old metal signs that they ground off the old sign coating. What did we have to lose? It was free. I matched the color of a state sign as close as I could (the background yellow color) with my Pantone book colors. I printed the entire sign and placed it on the used metal signs. Yes they were a little rough on the surface but the 3641 went on like a dream. No bubbles at all. Yes I know the 3641 is probably not the optimum material to use but I figure it should last for a few years and by then they may want new ones anyway. Even with the rough surface this went on so smooth I couldn't believe it. Anyway, my two cents about my experience so far.
