Is there any magnet material that you can print directly onto that won't invalidate the Roland warranty? I can cut it by hand...just want to print directly.
Mary Ann,
Printing onto the material does not invalidate the warranty. The cutting after printing will ruin the cut motor and invalidate the warranty though. The only models that can directly print onto magnetic material are the 54 inch models right now. They have an adjustable head height that will allow you to compensate for the height difference due to material thickness. I can demonstrate in class how it would look if you directly printed the material. Right now there are several materials on the market deigned for direct printing but for the 30 inch models you would not be able to use them.
For 30 inch machines you can print onto decal vinyl (any type will do) and then laminate or apply in any other manner the decal vinyl onto the magnetic material. I will demonstrate all of this in the class on Friday. I hope all of this makes sense. I hope to make a few videos in the upcoming months showing how to do all of these processes so we can add them to this website site for everyone to use when they have questions.
See you on Friday!
I have someone emailing me asking whether I can do magnets for vehicles. I know this will be covered in class this week, but I wanted to give her an answer before I left for class.
When doing magnets, would you oversize the vinyl, apply it to the magnet, then cut off the excess with an Exacto knife? Or, would you size your vinyl to match your magnet, then hope everything aligned perfectly?
Also, without using your Versacamm, how would you cut the magnet in the first place?
Kevin,
To make a car magnet you print with marks for hand cutting later and no contour cutting. Do not trim the material up to the edges but leave room for play. Laminate with an over laminate if it is desired and then apply to the magnetic material. After that, use the cut marks you have left as a guide and trim off excess material by hand using a straight edge and an exacto. Finish it by rounding out the corners. I do a medium amount of car magnets and also smaller promo magnets. In fact I made 16 of them last night for a job. We will be making them in the class on Friday. Take the job. You will be able to do it!
