I plan to install CorelDRAW X5 on my computer this week. What is the procedure for setting up a custom palette with the Cut Contour colors? Also, I recall reading a recent post by Steven Jackson where he said that the Roland color chart is built into X5. Should I select that as the default palette?

That is probably a personal preference but someone correct me if I am wrong. I would make whatever palette I use the most as the default. I have X4 at this time and have it set to open with 3 palettes.
Use RGB as the default palette. Under palette browser you can find the Roland palettes and then open the Roland palette. It has all the cutcontour etc colors in it already and will work perfectly.
OK. I have CorelDRAW X5 installed and have spent an hour or so trying to figure out how to set the default palette. I'm sure it's easy once you've done it; but you set mine during my VersaCAMM installation. Where do I find the color palettes and how do I set the default palette? Also, how do I display the Object Properties docker and make it automatically display each time I load CorelDRAW X5?
Dennis this is a no-brainer but that is because I know how - so the palette is built in as stated. You go to the color dockers and put the check mark there and walla. if you set it and your other favorite parameters - you can get it to open everytime you start a new page. I too make RGB my default as this is the palette that my laser and your future laser works with. Hope you had a great holiday weekend.
