Black ink
How often do you change your black ink? I am on my third set of CMY and have not changed the black once
when I check on the printer it shows no black
when I check on versaworks it shows an exclamation point and no black
My printer sp540v prints fine no issues
Is this normal?

That is how it should look right before you need to change it. We change our black inks the least as well.

I have the same printer, what size cartridge do you use? I use 440ml and when they are about half used versaworks shows that they are empty, Maybe the configuration settings are for the 220ml cartridge, I could be wrong but I get that with all my colours, also to add black is the least used colour

I finally ran out about 2 days later I did switch to 440's

The very first time I changed inks, the exact same thing happened to me with magenta
I had that little yellow exclamation mark covering a seemingly empty column of magenta
Thought there was something definitely wrong because the printer was still printing
I even posted here thinking my ink sensor was caput!
I ended up printing 100 more red rose files before it finally ran out.
The image was fairly big and covered with RED roses and the VC kept on going, much like that old Energizer Bunny
When the original cartridges ran out, I've only replaced them with 440's
Unlike the issues Chip seems to have, my VC knows. It doesn't signal empty when the cartridges are half empty.
My machine uses the full 440ml just fine.
